How are coaches selected?

Coaches are selected by the LYB Board through an application and review process. The board looks for candidates who demonstrate a commitment to player development, positive communication with families, and knowledge of the game. Priority is given to returning coaches in good standing. Interested in coaching? Contact us at info@lacrescentyouthball.org.

How are teams and rosters determined?

The board evaluates player registrations by age and division, then works to create balanced teams. For upper divisions, player evaluations and prior-season performance are considered. The goal is competitive balance so every team has a chance to develop and compete. Players are never guaranteed placement on a specific team.

What is the LYB philosophy on winning vs. player development?

La Crescent Youth Ball believes that long-term player development, sportsmanship, and love of the game are more important than any single win or loss. We compete to win, but never at the expense of equal playing time for younger divisions, coaching patience, or player safety. Our coaches are expected to prioritize development.

How do I submit a complaint, concern, compliment, or kudos?

We welcome all feedback — positive and constructive. You can reach the board directly at info@lacrescentyouthball.org. For sensitive matters, you may also contact any board member directly. All concerns are reviewed and responded to within 5 business days. We are committed to a positive environment for every family.

Are scholarships available for families with financial hardship?

Yes. LYB is committed to ensuring every child who wants to play has the opportunity to do so, regardless of financial circumstances. Scholarship assistance is available through our registration process — simply select the scholarship option when registering and the board will review your application. No child will be turned away for inability to pay.

What is the volunteer requirement and how does the deposit work?

All families (excluding 6U) are required to contribute volunteer hours during the season. A refundable $150 deposit is collected at registration and returned once your volunteer hours are completed. Volunteer opportunities include concessions, field prep, scorekeeping, and tournament staffing. You can sign up for shifts through the parent portal.

What equipment does my player need?

At minimum, your child needs a baseball glove, cleats, and a batting helmet. Many families also purchase their own bat (see the bat sizing chart in Coaches' Corner). LYB provides uniforms (jersey and hat). Catchers' gear is provided by the team. For softball players, helmets with a faceguard are required.

What are the age cutoff dates for registration?

6U: Must be 6 years old (entering 1st grade) by March 1, 2026. 8U: Must be at least 7 years old by March 1, 2026. 14U Baseball: Must be 14 or younger as of April 30, 2026. 14U Softball: Must be 14 or younger as of January 1, 2026.

When does the season start and end?

The LYB season typically begins in early-to-mid May and runs through late July or early August, depending on division. 6U Foundations runs June through mid-July. Specific dates are posted on the Game Center and communicated via email before the season.

How do I know if a game is cancelled due to weather?

Weather cancellations are communicated as quickly as possible via email and (when the app launches) push notification. The Game Center also shows live game status — check the site before heading to the field. Board members with Commissioner access have authority to cancel or postpone games.

Who is eligible to play in LYB?

Any youth meeting the age requirements who lives within or attends the La Crescent-Hokah School District (ISD #300) is eligible to participate.

How does the Applesmash Tournament work?

The Applesmash is La Crescent's annual invitational tournament open to teams from across the region. It features pool play followed by single-elimination bracket play, with a 3-game minimum guarantee per team. Teams register online for $300 per team. Tournament details are published on the Applesmash page.
